How to Get Rid of Boxelder Bugs

Getting rid of boxelders involves a combination of preventive measures, sanitation, and targeted treatments. Here are some steps to effectively manage and eliminate boxelder infestations:

1. Get rid of the bugs you see

Vacuum them up

  • Fastest and cleanest method
  • Empty the vacuum right away (they can smell when crushed)

Soapy water spray

  • Mix 1–2 tablespoons of dish soap with 1 quart of water
  • Spray directly on the bugs → kills on contact

Hose them off (outside)

  • Good for clusters on siding or patios

2. Prevent them from getting inside (most important)

Seal entry points

  • Caulk cracks around windows, doors, and siding
  • Repair window screens
  • Install or replace door sweeps

Reduce attraction to your home

  • They gather on warm, sunny exterior walls
  • Limit clutter and debris near the foundation
  • Trim vegetation touching the house

3. Long-term control

Exterior barrier treatment

  • Apply a residual insecticide around:
    • Windows
    • Doors
    • Foundation
  • Best done late summer/early fall before they try to enter

Address host trees (optional)

  • They feed on boxelder and maple trees
  • Removing female boxelder trees can reduce populations, but this is usually not necessary

4. Inside the house

  • Vacuum only (avoid sprays indoors)
  • Do not crush them—they can stain and smell
  • They don’t reproduce indoors, so once removed, the problem usually fades

5. Professional Help

  • Pest Control Services: For severe infestations or if you're unsure about handling boxelders, contact a professional pest control service. They can provide a thorough inspection and customized treatment plan.
